Bernal was a clinical psychologist who was born on April 13, 1931, in San Antonio, Texas, and she died of cancer at the age of 70 in 2001.〔Vasquez, M. T., & Lopez, S. (2002). Martha E. Bernal (1931-2001). American Psychologist, 57(5), 362.〕 She earned her doctoral degree at Indiana University Bloomington in 1962. She was the first Latina to receive a doctorate degree in psychology in the United States. She helped with the treatment and assessment of children with behavioral problems, but she also led the way for diversity in psychology with a scholarship program, and with strong emphasis on multiculturalism. ==Childhood== Martha Bernal was born April 13, 1931 in San Antonio, Texas to parents Enrique and Alicia Bernal, who were newly immigrated to the United States from their native country of Mexico. Martha was raised with a strong sense of identification with the Latino population as a result of her traditional Mexican upbringing which included a sense of belonging and support within her family. Unfortunately, Martha was not met with the same welcome arms in her community outside of her Mexican neighborhood.〔
